Mary Cousins, Potter

I enjoy making food and eating in good company, so it’s not surprising that I prefer to make domestic ware which I hope is both functional and attractive.

My work is mainly stoneware in a semi-matt mottled blue/grey glaze which is popular with customers.  The other favourite glaze is a soft shiny green.  I developed both these glazes over a number of years, the green glaze was the result of a fortuitous mistake whilst forgetting to tick off the ingredients – much like my cooking.

I make a few items in porcelain, hand built fun pieces such as my ‘ghost leaf’’ tea lights which reflect the veins of leaves in negative, and mugs with folded ribbon handles and sprigs.  As these are already highly detailed, a clear glaze suits them best.

How can potters really identify their main influences?  I often think it’s the last pot I looked at and liked, but the folded handles, the sprigs and stamps and the curvy shapes are very feminine but also owe something to the glass and ceramic ware in my local Roman museum and the swooping handles of some Greek vessels. Influences may change, but the love of clay and the excitement of its endless possibilities will never change.
